All over the news, there are reports that ChatGPT is more accurate than your doctor. Considering that the 3rd leading cause of death in America is a visit to your medical doctor it is easy to believe that a computer can diagnose better than a medical doctor. I’m going to get a little smug here, but ChatGPT will not be replacing me anytime soon. As a chiropractor for 44 years, I have something called experience working with patients and the computer, even if it can diagnose you correctly, can’t fix you.
It cannot resolve spinal dysfunctions that lead to more than just back aches. 20% of your brain is going through your spinal joints and those joints are innervated with the most powerful nerves in your body. 20% of your brain is in your spine, but 90% of what goes into your brain is coming from those nerves around your spinal joints and of course the spinal cord. Only 10% of the environmental information is entering your central nervous system via your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. That means while you think the chiropractor is working on your back, he is also working on your brain. This is one of the reasons why we get so many cases well that were failed by modern medicine. Your brain is the number one factor that will determine your health and getting faulty information about its environment will affect the subconscious part of your brain making decisions that will affect your other organ systems that can result in very bad health and your medical doctor and ChatGPT are not trained to recognize any of the things I just wrote.
You can take the wrong pill or the right pill as prescribed and still end up as one of the 3rd leading causes of death in America. As much as they love to scare you on the news that is owned by pharmaceutical companies, almost no one has ever died from a chiropractic adjustment. The news always fails to tell you the extenuating circumstances that more likely than not lead to their death. Put another way, the insurance companies know who is hurting who. My malpractice insurance is $1200 a year. My counterparts in medicine can be paying over $350,000 a year. Of course they see a lot more critical cases than I do and I don’t envy the stressful job that they have.
The amount of people that may have died from a chiropractor is a statistical anomaly because the number is ridiculously low. Often that case you heard of on the news monthly, is from a Ph.D. student doing the same review called a meta-analysis of a study that was done in 1950 that drew incorrect conclusions back then. It is an easy way to get a Ph.D. and research money generously provided by pharmaceutical companies steer the student into writing results that they want. Every time that study of an old faulty study gets restudied, it makes the news, which in turn makes you scared to go to a doctor that might help get you well without drugs or surgery.
On a personal note, I’ve seen tens of thousands of patients. I haven’t killed one of them. Haven’t even hurt one. All of my friends are chiropractors. They can make the same claim. As I used to joke, you would have a better chance of getting blown up in a plane by a terrorist, falling safely to earth on the wing, and then getting shot by the terrorist that also fell to earth on the other wing than dying from a chiropractic adjustment. If people knew this, drug sales would plummet and considering that most of our economy is based upon the public being sick, I’m not even sure I want you to get well.
I’ve worked in hospitals and I also see medical doctors as a patient and I have to tell them how to diagnose me. I have to tell them what blood tests that I want. Their boss, a computer tells them not to allow that test. I convince them otherwise. The last test that my doctor fought with me not to get, revealed that I had a pituitary tumor. I wrote that to imply that the average consumer of medical care doesn’t stand a chance in today’s system. However, on the other hand, when you need a good surgeon thank God, they still make them. ChatGPT will not be replacing them either.
In general practice, the physical exam is a joke. They are forced to cut corners and the incomplete physical exam, which used to be useful is a charade. Doctors today are not taught to be doctors, they are taught to be drug salesman and they are working for huge corporations. There are no more private practices like the T.V. Show from decades ago such as Marcus Welby, M.D.
They are forced to see too many patients in too little time. They are forced to cut corners in spite of that commercial you might have seen from a medical center with a lot of smiling faces in scrubs. I have friends that are working as medical doctors in those centers and they are constantly quitting because they are so overworked. Their job is to now get you out of the office. So of course, a computer could do their job better when it comes to diagnosing.
But it can’t do my job at all. ChatGPT is supposedly better at diagnosing than a real doctor, but I don’t see that as going to improve anyone’s overall health. At the end of the algorithm a drug will be prescribed. Sometimes at that point, your health is so compromised you have no choice but to take it. Whether you like RFK jr or not, you would be well advised to improve your own health. Their idea of improving your health is when you have pneumonia, to cut down to only two packs of cigarettes a day. You can do better than that without the help of ChatGPT.
