Hunchbacks do worse than just walk funny through Notre Dame

In modern society people might not be able to hear the bells of Notre Dame because their ears are plugged in listening to their phone.  As they live on that phone they have developed what is now popularly known as tech neck or text neck also known as forward head posture.  If not on your phone, many people work behind a computer and they are not only bending their neck forward, but their entire posture is hunched over a keyboard struggling to look at a monitor all day.

So here is some simple neurology as to why that is not very good for your health.  We all know by now that people that sit all day for a living have lower health markers on their DNA.  But why?

How Poor Posture Disrupts Your Spine, Brain, and Overall Health

Our brains require constant stimulus and the only constant stimulus on earth is gravity. We evolved in earth’s gravitational field.  Our nerves through evolution noticed this thing pushing down on them and decided to adapt and we have special nerves in our body that can transduce that gravitational field into electricity.  That electricity is used to recharge our battery/aka brain.

While 20% of our brain is in our spine, 90% of the information going into our brain comes from the spinal joints protecting the spinal cord and of course the cord itself.  Only 10% enters via our eyes, ears, nose, mouth.  That is a lot of information and if you are hunched over all day you are stressing out your spine and that can create some dis-information entering your brain.  That in turn results in bad management of all of the systems in our body that would create better health.  It’s not just a back ache happening from bad posture.  Of course a back ache is usually how I meet people/patients and I can talk about health all day to them, but when they are in pain, they are not appreciating any of that.  That is why I make people read my blogs.  Kidding I can’t even make them stand up straight.  Then again, usually when I meet them for the first time they can’t stand up.  They are lying on the floor in agony.  Little tiny deep spinal muscles are typically the culprit.

Back Pain From Sitting All Day

Sitting all day weakens those muscles and weak muscles hurt.  But when they go into spasm from total over use over many years, they become disabling.  Good posture could help prevent what I call a back attack, but sometimes they occur for no apparent reason at all.  Medicine has side effects, but technically there is no such thing.  They are the effects of that drug.  There is no side effect to having better posture.  If there was, it would it would be better health.

Many of my patients see me regularly(typically monthly) to help them manage their posture.  Why do they need my help?  Because deep postural muscles that oppose gravity allowing us to stand up straight are not voluntary muscles like the ones in your arms and legs.  These muscles are under control of your automatic pilot that fights gravity called your cerebellum and that is your subconscious.  When a chiropractor is adjusting those spinal joints that are innervated with the largest, fastest, most powerful nerves in your body, they are strongly affecting the subconscious part of your brain where all the mechanisms for health are located.  The nerve signals leaving those adjusted joints are firing onto many aspects of your brain stem and cerebellum, which then fires up your consciousness.

That is one reason why kids that play video games are not doing as well in school as kids that play actual sports in earth’s gravitational field filled with sunshine, which is what life on earth requires.  A better life includes a spine working correctly so it can interpret the stimulus generated from a gravitational load on the spinal joints.  A hunched over spine is not doing a very good job of that.  Additionally, even though insurance companies are not very big fans of chiropractors, they do recommend you go monthly since they will pay for that.  I’m positive no one at an insurance company understands what you just read, but they will allow you monthly visits.  The bad news for you is I don’t accept insurance.  That is actually good news because that means I do a better job.

Chiropractors can help back pain created from sitting all day or just the neck pain that comes with constant computer use. Chiropractors are top experts at spinal alignment which also benefits upper back pain and people that suffer with kyphosis.

How long does posture correction take?

There is no answer to that.  Too many variables to consider.  I’d consider posture as an ongoing battle since gravity is relentless.  I think the chiropractors in Los Angeles best for long term postural correction are the ones’ that specialize in biophysics.  I typically do emergency work but enjoy someone that wants the benefits of a real chiropractic adjustment.
